Private Moses Scofield

Fifth Iowa Volunteer Cavalry

Moses Scofield enlisted in the Curtis Horse with not only his brother, but also his father. Although his father Sergeant Charles Scofield elected to return home to Iowa at the end of this three year enlistment, alongside his brother Sergeant William Scofield, Moses reenlisted to see the war to its just conclusion.

Like most Civil War soldiers, Moses began and ended the war as a private. Both of this family members, however, served as noncommissioned officers in Company A. Following the War Between the States, the brothers moved to California in 1874, before finally settling in Colorado.
