Private John Schwirtz

John Schwirtz (listed in the Official Rosters as "Schwartz" or "Sweartz") was twenty-two when he enlisted in Company I of the Fifth Iowa Volunteer Infantry on June 24, 1861. He served with that regiment during the whole of its distinguished history, and reenlisted in 1864 to join his comrades who were transferred to Company G of the Fifth Iowa Volunteer Cavalry. He served in that regiment until the conclusion of the war, mustering out on August 11, 1865 at Nashville, Tennessee.
