Wagoner Byron Tower

Fifth Iowa Volunteer Infanty

Bryon L. Tower was twenty-four when he enlisted in Company A of the Fifth Iowa Infantry. He must have possessed particular skills, since he was mustered as a Wagoner. The Wagoner was considered to hold a rank the equivalent of a Corporal.

In an engagement near Moscow, Tennessee and later paroled back to the regiment at Benton Barracks, Missouri. The Official Roster does not mention anything else about his service, beyond the fact that he mustered out on July 31, 1864 at Chattanooga, Tennessee. Tower was among those men who had seen enough of combat, and he did not reenlist with those of his comrades who "consolidated" with the Fifth Iowa Cavalry.
