Fifth Iowa Volunteer Cavalry Fifth Iowa Volunteer Infantry

We wish you the very best of luck in your quest to research your ancestor who served in the War Between the States. We hope the information below aids you in your search. The Fifth Iowa Volunteer Regimental Website has access to the complete Iowa rosters, and we will be pleased to share that information with you as a starting point. After that, however, you will doubtless wish to learn more. And, anywhere along the line, we would be honored to host a page dedicated to the memory of your ancestor who served with the Fifth Iowa Cavalry or the Fifth Iowa Infantry. Happy hunting, and keep us posted on the results of your research.

There are several different avenues you can pursue in seeking information about your ancestor(s). If you simply have their name, and don't know their regiment, you can check out the National Park Service Civil War Soldiers and Sailors project which is progressing toward making basic information about all veterans available. For a nominal fee, the Civil War Data site (much farther along in the process of recording everyone, and with additional information available) is worth checking out.

When you have some basic information, such as your ancestor's regiment (or at least his home state, for which he most likely served) you will want to visit the National Archives and Records Administration. They hold the Military Service and Pension records (separately) and for a modest price you can order copies of any records which pertain to your veteran.
