Quartermaster Sergeant James Young

Fifth Iowa Volunteer Cavalry

James S. Young was born in Pennsylvania, but resided in Bellevue, Iowa when he enlisted on August 13, 1862 in Company H of the Fifth Iowa Cavalry. The fact that he was of a "mature" age (in his early thirties) doubtless contributed to the fact that he became Company H's Quartermaster Sergeant on January 28, 1865.

Young mustered out with the majority of his comrades on June 17, 1865 at Nashville, Tennessee. Although we do not know anything else about his postwar life, The Parsons Daily Sun of May 30, 1904 includes his name among the veterans who were buried in Oakwood Cemetery in Miami County, Kansas.
