Private John Schnering

John Schnering was a twenty-seven year old resident of Dubuque County when he enlisted in Company E of the Fifth Iowa Volunteer Cavalry. The Official Roster says that he was born in France, although Stephen Schnering, who served in the same company and may have been a relative, was listed as having been born in Germany. John served with the regiment for the remainder of its history, mustering out on August 11, 1865 at Nashville, Tennessee.
