Surgeon B. Taylor Wise

Fifth Iowa Volunteer Cavalry

B. Taylor Wise was a twenty-seven year old resident of St Louis when he was appointed Assistant Surgeon on February 1, 1862. A year and a half later, on September 27, 1862, he was promoted Surgeon of the regiment. He continued to care for the wounded troopers as their war moved from garrison duty in Tennessee to incursions of Confederate territory to the south.

Wise served to the end of the conflict, not mustering out until the regiment gathered for their final military ceremony on August 11, 1865 at Nashville, Tennessee. One interesting note derived from the Official Roster identifies his birth state as Ohio in the first roster and Kentucky in the Consolidated roster.

The Fifth Iowa Cavalry site is deeply indebted to Michael Breeling for sharing the civil war image of Wise, for which he maintains the copyright.
