Sergeant William Tebbets

Fifth Iowa Volunteer Cavalry

William S. Tebbets enlisted as the Fifth Corporal of Company E of the Fifth Iowa Infantry on September 20, 1861. His brother, Private Ezra Tebbets, enlisted in the same company. On January 1, 1863, William was promoted to Fifth Sergeant. When reenlisting on New Years Day of 1864, he was promoted to Fourth Sergeant.

Although his brother would end up dying while a prisoner of the Confederates, Tebbets continued to serve well until the war's conclusion. Before being mustered out on August 11, 1865 at Nashville, Tennessee, he was promoted on February 3, 1865 to Second Sergeant and Company Commissary Sergeant on July 1, 1865.
