Private John Schlecht

According to the Official Roster, John Schlecht was born in Germany. He was twenty-seven when he enlisted in Company H of the Fifth Iowa Cavalry on August 22, 1862. It is quite possible that Corporal Joseph Schlecht,who served alongside him in the same company was his younger brother. Both men survived the war, and John mustered out of the regiment on June 17, 1865 at Nashville, Tennessee.
