Private James Rheems

Fifth Iowa Volunteer Cavalry

The Official Roster does not reveal the reason that Private James Rheems enlisted in Company D of the Fifth Iowa Cavalry on December 14, 1863. Many of the men who joined midway through the war did so because they were too young at its outset. However, Rheems was forty-two at the time of his recruitment into the Union army. He served for the duration of the war, and mustered out of the regiment on June 3, 1865 at Davenport, Iowa.
