Prisoners Held at Andersonville

Fifth Iowa Volunteer Cavalry

During the many battles and skirmishes in which members of the Fifth Iowa Cavalry were engaged, scores of them fell into enemy hands. Some of those who were captured, were paroled fairly rapidly. Most however, remained involuntary guests of the Confederates for varying lengths of time. The least fortunate ended up serving their time in a number of different camps including the notorious Camp Sumter, better known as the infamous Andersonville.

Today the prison is the site of the United States Memorial for all Prisoners of War. It is also the final resting place of the men who did not survive its harsh conditions. Many members of the were confined at Andersonville, and although most managed to live through the ordeal, not all did. At least two, in fact, played a prominent role in standing up to the Raiders who terrorized their fellow prisoners. Although we do not know their individual names, we do see the Fifth Iowa Cavalry Regiment specifically cited as contributing brave men to the ranks of the Regulators.

By researching the Andersonville Prison records, and correlating them to the Official Roster of the regiment, we can determine with some confidence which members of the Fifth Iowa Cavalry who were confined there. The following list applies a common format to the military records of each of these brave men.
