Captain Frederick Meyer

Fifth Iowa Volunteer Cavalry

Frederick J. Meyer was a twenty-three year old German immigrant residing in Cooper's Hill, Missouri when he enlisted on October 4, 1861 as Second Sergeant of Company M. He was promoted to First Sergeant on October 1, 1862.

The final year of the war, he was commissioned as the senior officer in his company. He was promoted to Captain on January 27, 1865. Having done his part to preserve the unity of his adopted homeland, he was mustered out on August 11, 1865 at Nashville, Tennessee.

The Fifth Iowa Cavalry site is deeply indebted to Michael Breeling for sharing the civil war image of Meyer, for which he maintains the copyright.
