Private John William Austin

Fifth Iowa Volunteer Cavalry

The story of Private John William Austin is a sad, and brief one. In the midst of the war, this eighteen year old residence of Maysville, Alabama decided to cast his lot with the Union army. He enlisted on November 13, 1863. Unfortunately, while on furlough in Bellevue, Iowa on February 12, 1864, he died due to causes not cited in the Official Roster.
